Brownfield SAP S/4HANA migration (system conversion) converts an existing SAP ECC system to S/4HANA in place — preserving existing configuration, custom developments, historical transaction data, and organisational structure. It is faster and lower risk than greenfield but carries forward legacy configuration decisions and may not fully leverage S/4HANA’s simplified data model. Greenfield SAP S/4HANA migration builds a new S/4HANA system from scratch — redesigning processes for S/4HANA best practice, simplifying configuration, and migrating only the required historical data. It takes longer and requires more organisational change but delivers a cleaner, better-performing system. Selective data transition is a hybrid: new SAP S/4HANA system with selective migration of current data and configuration from the legacy system. EMUG Tech recommends the approach based on legacy system quality, process redesign ambition, and migration risk tolerance.

EMUG Tech’s data migration methodology follows a structured six-step approach: source data profiling and quality assessment identifying completeness gaps, duplicate records, and referential integrity issues; source-to-target data mapping defining how legacy data fields map to modernised system objects; data cleansing and enrichment resolving data quality issues before migration; custom migration utility development for each data object (materials, BOMs, routings, PLM items, documents); test migration iterations (typically 3 to 5) validating migration completeness, performance, and business rule compliance; and production cutover with post-migration integrity verification.
